Technology is a tool that enables our species to ‘advance’. Short of a real roadmap for progress, we understand ‘advancing’ to look similar to change. Technology enables us to change ourselves and our minds whilst also affecting the environment around us. As we and our environments are two sides of the same coin, for the longest time, any changes that technology made to improve our quality of life were hailed as advancements for humanity.
Exploring the Cosmos Together
Author of award-winning science book and TV series Cosmos, Carl Sagan believed that humans were, by nature, explorers. He noted that “we were wanderers from the beginning”; reflecting on the epic world-crossing voyages made by many civilizations in recent history. Sagan also talked to the existence of technological innovation as being indicative of this human nature as its role in our society is one of a tool for further ‘wandering’.
Hidden within Sagan’s messaging and present in most philosophical texts looking at the role of technology in our lives is the concept of ‘connecting’. Whether to each other or the world around us, technology throughout the ages has reduced the distance between people both physically via breakthroughs in transportation and construction technologies and psychologically via improved methods of communication from hand-writing, to printing, to digitalization, and the Internet.
The greatest takeaway from looking at the trend of technological advancements over time is how they all point to a direction of being closer to each other and understanding more about our environment. Although many may argue about a lack of real connection to Earth and nature, that is different from our ‘environment’. In reality, humans do not have any natural habitat and have therefore had to build our own environment.
Digitalize the World
Many people consider the Internet to be the world’s most valuable resource as within it contains the remnants of all human knowledge throughout history. The Internet enables us to communicate with virtually the entire human population regardless of geographical positioning, language, or time barriers. It has driven us closer together than ever before and allowed for incredible innovations.
As an attempt to bridge the gap between the real world and virtual world, blockchain technology is a way to determine ‘truth’ online. The blockchain revolution is popularizing the idea of decentralization and allowing for open participation in a global virtual economy. Individuals partaking in this revolution are able to reclaim their financial autonomy and make personalized decisions about their wealth.
Cosmos is For Connecting
Given the same name as Carl Sagan’s legendary series; the Cosmos Network shares a vision to connect and create an Internet of blockchains. This ever-expanding ecosystem is being built to better support connections between people and further enable innovators to come together and provide services for individuals wanting to be a part of the future cyber world.
Technical details aside, the project team are visionaries who see the long-term implications of blockchain and how this will affect the daily lives of billions of people around the world. Cosmos understand that in building technological tools, they are enabling a generation of ‘wanderers’ to push conventional boundaries and advance forward into cyberspace. Even the native ecosystem token name of ‘ATOM’, speaks volumes to the team’s comprehension of our infinitely large cosmos as being built by atoms.
This company ethos is something to be admired in the space as many projects looking to profit from investors pander by making loud, bold statements about their market capitalizations. However, as many in the industry will have observed, Cosmos seem more determined to prove themselves as providers of quality technological tools that create meaningful value, rather than just another crypto pipe-dream.
